Nectar of nature
Source of life

"Your food should be your medicine
and your medicine your food...
Hippocrates

From the ancient times until today, honey has been the main natural sweetener. It is an important source of energy for our body, it has antiseptic properties and it is invigorating. It raises the pace of the heart beating, it reduces the problems of stomach ulcer, it relieves from insomnia, constipation, sore throat, and it generally contributes to the good functioning of our body. The trace elements it contains play an important role in the metabolism and nourishment and they are ingredients of the skeleton and the cells. Its beneficial properties do not stop here: Honey has an antimicrobic action and it prevents the growth of bacteria and other pathogenic organisms. It's useful for the cleaning, sterilization and healing of wounds and burns. It also helps greatly the body in case of anemia, due to the ferrum it contains. Honey is superior to sugar, which is a chemical product and has been accused of a great deal of side effects to the human body. On the contrary, honey is a 100% natural product and it comes from the nectar of the flowers, a sweet liquid that the flowers secrete, to attract the bee. During the procedure of the honey production, bees add to this their glandular secretions, and as a result they enhance its nutritional value. The natural antibiotic elements that honey contains -inhibine etc- come from either the plants, or from the bodies of the bees.

From the pine-forests and flowers of Thassos

Thassos, from the ancient times until today, has been a dynamic center of apiculture. Thousands of swarms of bees exist in the piney forestall areas. Even though the large conflagrations during the last years have destroyed almost half of the pine forest in Thassos, there have been significant attempts to confront the problem by planting trees, in which not only did the apiarists take part but also all the inhabitants of the island. Today in Thassos, many thousands of kilos of honey are produced, which comes from many varieties of trees (pine, fir etc) or from varieties of flowers (thyme etc). In the area of Prinos, you can find the Apiarist Co-operatives of Thassos, which are about 100 apiarists strong. It has been a vigorous apiarist centre for the last twenty-five year. Its/ objective is to gather the honey from the producers, to standardize it and to distribute it to the local market, as well as abroad. The standardization takes place in the modern plant of the Co-operatives of Thassos, without additives and processes that destroy the organic ingredients of the product. It will be our honor and pleasure if you pay us a visit so as to have the opportunity to show you around in our plant and to offer you some of the honey we produce. You can find the co-operatives of Thassos on: the circular road of Skalas Prinou-Skalas Rachoniou.
